Let's face it - Dads are hard to buy for!

Or if you have a dad like mine, you ask him what he wants and he says, "Just to be with my family" or "I have all that I need."

Robin Foster-McClure is an amazing woman, whom I have the privilege to work with as a consultant on my team and she is a dear friend. Robin works in a Family History Center and is dedicated to helping families discover connections and bridge generations together. Eyes to See

The legacy I want to leave my posterity is the ability to endure and overcome obstacles using eyes that really can see. They will know that I am not speaking of seeing physically, but seeing whatever picture they paint on the canvas of life with their mind's eye....and holding fast to it. The struggle is not outward but inward.

There are so many reasons for people in the world to let challenges get them off the path. We have so much in the world of natural disaster and suffering which result from the actions of others. I think now is the time to remind ourselves that we still live in a time where we can choose whether or not we will be defeated or whether we will pull up our boot straps and trudge forward.

The first step to overcoming obstacles comes in how we choose to react to them. We can allow our vision to be clouded by becoming angry, hurt, or offended---or we can exercise our freedom to choose the good consequences of not becoming distracted or swept away by the winds of adversity. We will then find avenues to creatively adapt to situations we would otherwise deem hopeless.

My book is about seeing past the distractions and holding fast to the clear mental picture we have which may not yet be physically manifest in our lives. When all about us the walls are crumbling, we can look forward with faith. All we need are eyes to see, and remember.

I am so happy to be able to have put in a book, what I think is the greatest challenge of live.....to not let go of those things we have seen.

I used to have bare, boring, ugly walls. Sure, I added the HGTV-recommended "paint on the walls" but still...bare and boring.

From Fridge to Published Book

Ellie told me, "Mom, my pictures have stories too."

Then, I looked at the fridge, the walls, the chalkboard - all covered with her art - her stories.

Well, Ellie, you know what we do with photos and stories around here...

"We put them in a book!", she shouted with a smile.

So, we took her favorite pictures and in no time, she was scanning them in on her own.

"Make sure they are 200 dpi!", she remembered.

Scanning Tip: Scan an image at 200 dpi, if you are going to print it in your project at about that same size. If you want to make it larger in your project, scan it at a higher resolution - 300 or 400 dpi - as long as the file size isn't over 10 MB.

Then, we logged in to Heritage Studio and chose a blank 8x8 Storybook to create.

Ellie uploaded her the digital images of her artwork and dragged them to where she wanted them on the page.

Next, she wrote (typed) the wonderful stories that went with each and every picture. Wow! What a wonderful imagination she has!

I am so glad we did this! These wonderful stories would have truly been forgotten - or maybe never even known.

And of course - the her smile at the end with a hardbound book of her art is PRICELESS!

Totally Custom TILES

As I wrote the heading for today's post, I thought of the shows that my brother-in-law loves about customizing motorcycles and cars.

Well, no long mustaches and tattooed arms here but you CAN customize a tile however you wish - and for much less money than what you would pay for one in the store. (Not to mention a lot less than a chopper!)

Hmmmm...maybe tiles deserve their own show too.

The tiles shown are in two sizes: 12x12 and 6x6. I use a Heritage Makers 12x12 page for each size because I can make FOUR 6x6 tiles from ONE 12x12 page. Now, THAT'S a huge value!

WHAT YOU NEED:

- 12x12 Heritage Makers page (contact me for discount printing)

- Design your own page or use a pre-designed template from the Template Gallery (I also have more that I can transfer to you - just ask!)

- Ceramic tile (available at any home improvement store - quality of tile doesn't matter, so you can get the really cheap ones. I wouldn't get one with two many bumps in it though)

- Mod Podge (I prefer matte for this)

- Foam brush (plate or bowl for putting the Mod Podge in)

- Paper trimmer/scissors

HOW TO:
Step 1

Design your 12x12 page and submit to publish. It will take a few days to receive it back but the quality of ink, color and paper is worth it!

Step 2

Trim the edges of your page to fit the tile.

Step 3

Apply a thin, even layer of Mod Podge to the top side of the ceramic tile.

Step 4

Lay the page on the tile and smooth out from the center to the edges. Bubbles may appear and the next step will help with this. Also, in my experience, I have found that I do what I can but the bubbles that do keep showing will flatten out after a day or two.

Step 5

Let the Mod Podge dry, then lay tile face (paper side) down on a flat, clean surface.

Put something heavy on it and leave it for awhile (30 minutes) or even overnight, if possible.

Step 6

After drying, turn tile over so that the paper side is showing again. Apply an even, thin layer of Mod Podge to the paper side.

Step 7

Let dry

That's it! Now you have a beautiful custom tile to display in your home or to give as a gift that will be treasured!

Fun and Interactive Family Tree

My friend Heidi Arave and I had a "brainstorming" session of poster ideas and using magnets made with Heritage Makers products too. "How about a magnetized, interactive Family Tree?" I suggested.

Well, Heidi put the words into ACTION and here it is!

My WHY

I’m having one of “those nights” again…so many thoughts and ideas in my head that I don’t want to go to sleep because I might forget them – so, I better write them down.

Why I do what I do –

We all have those moments…”Why am I doing this?” And it was today, when I stepped away from the computer, the contact lists, the brochures and even the storybooks – that my “Why” of what I do and why I do it each day became even stronger in my heart.

I was at the hospital today with my mom and I noticed that most of the people in the hospital rooms around her were elderly. Their aging bodies needed some repair and even replacement, after years of hard work, use and experiences. I watched their slippered feet slowly shuffle down the hall or need help to be put carefully into the foot rests of the wheelchairs. I hope they didn’t mind me watching. I couldn’t help it. I watched in awe, humility and gratitude. They had lived so many stories – each of them coming from a different background, experiences, trials and triumphs. I just wanted to pull up a chair in their room and talk and write it all down, before they and their stories were gone.

Then, I thought of the storybooks I had published – when I had taken the time to sit down and “write it all down”. One of the first was about my son, Connor, where he shared all of the things that he CAN do. Even though he wrote it when he was six years old, he still smiles and walks a little taller each time he reads it – or hears me bragging about it.

Another storybook I remembered was one that I had created and published this past year, about my amazing grandmother. (She would blush and deny it, if she heard me use the word “amazing” to describe her, but to me, that’s not even a vivid enough adjective. She was.)
She would never talk with me much about her life story for a book when she was alive, always saying that I should write about someone else’s life story. So, after she passed away, I scanned each page of her journal, the pressed keepsakes inside, the words she wrote, the letters, the recipes – and put them into a storybook. The words are her own – from her own journal years ago. Her legacy will live on and on and as her posterity, we are better for it. Now, many family members have a copy of her storybook. I think she would like that. She was/is one of my real-life heroes and I know she is to my daughter, Ellie, now too.

And as I remembered these books and reflected on them and the people that they are about, I realized this…again. What I do is help people leave their mark – leave a permanent “footprint” that they were here and that what they did every day meant something. Not just at the end of life – but in celebrating those “everyday moments” of what we do too.

Every day, we are each learning, teaching, growing, serving, taking, giving – and for what? To start it all over again the next day? And then, for what?

It is those stories – those moments – in every day, that weave us into who we are – uniquely. There is no else like you.
And these moments of struggle, challenge, growth, experience, love, gratitude and triumph are lessons that we are to learn from, grow from and pass on to posterity. Then, they matter.

But, what if the moments, the lessons, the appreciation – what if that is never preserved or shared?
It will all be forgotten. Unless it is written – preserved.

That is the power of Story. It is through story and storybooks through the ages that we preserve our past and take it with us to the future.

So, that is WHY I do what I do. To help people – even my own family and myself – preserve, share and celebrate the lives that are lived – at any age – and the stories that are shared and learned from, even for generations to come.
Every life matters.

Every story deserves a book of its own.

We ALL have a story to share.
I saw this quote tonight, after my time at the hospital. It was perfect.
“The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.”

"I read about Heritage Makers on Oprah's Top Christmas Picks. I've done some books on iPhoto and Shutterfly, but when I checked out the website I liked the idea that it was like scrapbooking, but computerized. Before becoming a full-time mom I was a graphic designer, so I understand design and am good with a computer. I like the idea of scrapbooking, but never seemed to find the time or space with 4 kids.

I started off with a cookbook (that is still in the works). I love to cook and wanted to do one as a Christmas gift for some family and close friends. That will be done by this Christmas - I hope. I made a Father's Day book for my husband that he LOVED and was so surprised.

Disneyland...DONE!

I LOVE this story from Lacie Murray in Utah.

Lacie and her family recently went on a trip to Disneyland and she came back with LOTS of photos and great memories.

Before those good times could be forgotten, she put the photos and the stories into a blank softbound/spiral bound book. She even did journaling around the photos to save the stories that went with photos too!

Then, she ordered a copy of the book for her kids and they LOVE it! They can all remember their fun vacation together page-by-page.

Lacie said that if she would have traditionally scrapbooked their Disneyland vacation, the photos would still be on the camera and the memories would be fading. Now, the photos are preserved and shared and the memories are being remembered every day!

Jill's Story (Template Design By Jill Means)

Here are the "heritage blocks" I created about my grandparents. My sister-in-law, Kate and I wanted to feature my grandparents in our homes, but we didn't really want to take up wall space with framed photos. We created these blocks instead. You can put them on a table, shelf, or wall ledge. People can pick them up and read them, kids can even play with them.

The Heritage of a Name

What's in a name? LOTS!

Names are our own personal banners that we carry with us wherever we go in life.

First names - Perhaps we are named after someone and the name comes with a story - a heritage. That is the case with my daughter Ellie. She is named after my wonderful and beautiful grandmother who has since passed on but we are reminded of her through Ellie - and she is adding her own legacy to the name. I love it!

Sometimes, like in the case of my son Connor, it's the first name the mom and dad agree on, so it becomes a keeper. His name is "new" - and he is building a heritage for it every day - one that will become a legacy even at the mention of his name and perhaps his name will be carried on in generations to come.

Last names always come with a story. They are our heritage in the sum of one word. What the story is...well, that is part of the heritage but we are adding to it every day - for better or for worse.

I LOVE the storybook that my friend, Heidi Arave, did. It is a beautiful discovery and reminder of what their name is all about. In a few pages, it shares her family's values and what they stand for. Her young son recently made a good choice and he said, "I did that because I am an Arave, Mom, and that's what Araves do!"

This is a CORNERSTONE book - one of the four foundation books of building your family's heritage library. I can't wait to make my own.

Happy Birthday! - Great Ideas for Birthday BLISS

I haven't bought Birthday invitations, thank you notes or even a special gift at the store in YEARS!

From my own computer, I can use pictures that mean the most and create personal touches and MEANINGFUL gifts that are so fun to create and so priceless to give and share - and I do all of this with Heritage Studio! INVITATIONS
My kids have had custom invitations for their birthdays for the past few years and it has become a fun part of their birthday tradition. First, we pick a theme and then we choose a photo - or a few- from memories past that fit right in and add it to the invite. I spend just a little more than buying a generic pack at the store but the results are priceless and oh, so worth it!

THANK YOU NOTES
At the party, of course I am going crazy with the camera and taking tons of pictures (when I am not dishing out ice cream or getting cake out of the carpet). Then, we just put the pictures of guests into a custom "Thank you" note to thank them for coming and for their gift. They never get thrown away - they become a gift right back to the special guest. It also gets my kids really involved in the "Thank you" process and not just the "getting" part of the birthday.

POSTERS
Posters are a GREAT gift idea. You can showcase a collage of photo memories on a 12x18 or 18x24 poster and give it "as is" or in a frame. You can create your own design or use one of the MANY templates in the Template Gallery.

Melissa's story about how she uses Heritage Makers posters:

I have always done a photo collage for all major events. Weddings, funerals, anniversaries, birthday milestones… I used to spend hours at a Kodak kiosk scanning and printing photos, then hours of cutting and glueing to a tri-fold poster board. Often spending the night before the event up until wee hours of the morning finishing it up… even my own wedding we were glueing photos on the morning of. With Heritage Makers it takes less time to put together (especially now that I made a collage template to use), because of the shipping and production time I have to finish it early which actually takes stress of as the event gets closer and since it’s a much better quality it can be framed and becomes a gift as well for the people involved. Before when the event was over we always had to pull the collage apart and it was sort of depressing. I mean what do you do with a poster board of photos it just doesn't hold up. I did a big poster like this for my dads 60th and it now hangs in his dining room, my sisters wedding one now hangs in her apartment. Now my parents have an upcoming 40th anniversary and I am trying to think what to do, plus my moms 60th is also this year… I cant keep making them a collage or their walls will be too full.

Have you had an "A-ha!" moment recently?

I just had one and I wanted to share it with you.

Heidi created a PLANNER!!! It has her favorite photos and she can customize it however she wants with what is important to her life and needed in her own personal and family's schedule. I LOVE IT!

Top o' the mornin' everyone!

Okay, I admit it. I have been counting down the days for March to get here - -and not just to "officially" celebrate my Irish roots.

I love February. I do. I have nothing against it. But March - oh, March. You bring the sounds of birds chirping, the warm sun comes back to give little "treats" and remind us for a longer stay to come. The big, bulky boots and parkas soon evolve to sweaters and even a carefree pair of flip flops every now and then. March - you bring the reminder of hope and new beginnings and of brighter days that are ours now - and that are to come.

STORY MAPS - Are available in a variety of themes. You simply download and print the Story Map that you want to use and you answer the questions for each page. The answers become your story! You can take the Story Map with you to interview loved ones in person or over the phone or just to put pen to paper for your own thoughts. What is a Workshop?

Bring Heritage to Your Home...With Easy and Fun Heritage Makers Products

The following ideas are submitted by Heidi Arave and other heritage makers. They are all created with Heritage Makers products and a few additional, inexpensive materials:

I have been writing storybooks for over seven years and with every book I publish I am just as excited to get it back as I was with my very first book! With Heritage Makers large product selection I am now hooked on Heritage Makers home decor! That’s right, home decor made just the way I want it and with my favorite stories, pictures, and values!

The 12×12 pages can be used for so many things! Rather than putting posters of famous athletes, movie stars or super heroes on my son’s walls, I created 3 12×12 pages with a photo on each page with a big word below it and a definition. Here are some of the words I chose to teach my son:

TRADITION: Beliefs or customs taught by one generation to the next (and used a picture of my husband, son and 2 little nephews fishing at the family cabin.) HEROES: You don’t raise heroes, you raise sons. And if you treat them like sons, they’ll turn out to be heroes, even if it’s just in your own eyes. ~Walter M Schirra Sr. (I used a picture of my 12 little nephews and my son.)

HERITAGE: Heritage is a million everyday moments (and used a picture of my husband and son looking at a river)

My son was SO excited when his pages arrived in the mail. He saw the first page and said “Oh, I want that one in my room!” Then he saw the next page and said “Oh, I want that one in my room!” And again when he saw the third one he said the same thing. You would have thought I just bought him a new toy he had always wanted!

Another fun thing you can do with your 12×12 pages is to put a big family picture on it and write a fun quote. I put a photo of my family walking across a bridge with the saying “No road is too long with good company.” I framed it and have it on an easel on my fireplace.

There are just so many great ideas you can use Heritage Makers products for! Something else you can do (thanks Corissa Beck for the idea) is to mod podge a 12×12 page to a 12×12 ceramic tile! WOW, simply beautiful! You can also design a 12×12 page into 4 different 6×6 images and cut them once you receive the page and mod podge them onto 6×6 tiles! These make great gifts!

And it doesn’t stop there! Remember the photo cubes from the 70’s… we’ll they’re back! Make 6 3×3 inch boxes on your 12×12 page (or 8.5×11 page). Cut the squares out and put them into the photo cube.

Great idea: The photos on the cube can match people in the Heritage Makers storybooks in your home. Find the person on the photo cube, then read their story.

MORE GREAT IDEAS!

I did a variation and made 9 4×4 squares from the 12×12 pages. I painted the edge of the 4×4 tiles with glossy black paint, mod podged on my designed squares, and then put adhesive small felt circles from Home Depot on back to protect the table. They do look fabulous! I also made a set of 6×6 tiles with a picture, a word and a quote. And then another set of 6×6 each with one of the 4 HM ways to get started. Thes are in stands on on my display table. - Brenda H.

I make the 12×12 pages and Mod Podge them to 12×12 canvas boards…then they are not breakable (for kids) they are light and can be hung on the wall,framed or displayed on an easel. Thanks for all of the other ideas. I am crazy about making Heritage! - Lori S.
